Summer Camp Is Now Open For Registration

Once again, Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, located at 401 South New York Road, Galloway, New Jersey USA, will be the venue for the 2014 USAF Summer Camp beginning Sunday, July 27th and ending Saturday, August 2nd. To accommodate Aikido camp participants and their family and friends, the hotel has blocked off a number of rooms at a discounted rate, including a very limited number of rooms for arrival prior to camp on Saturday, July 26th.

You are encouraged to register for a Camp Package and book your hotel room as soon as possible because of the large turnout expected due to Yamada Sensei’s 50th anniversary celebration. Although you will have to pay in full for your Camp Package at the time of registration, you will not incur charges for your hotel reservation until your actual stay. DEADLINE for registration is Friday, June 20th but the blocked off USAF discounted hotel rooms may be fully occupied prior to the DEADLINE.

We look forward to seeing you at camp!

The USAF will present its donation at the USAF summer camp banquet dinner.  All credit cards are accepted and you do not need a PayPal account to donate. No checks, cash or money orders are being accepted at this time, so please visit this link to proceed: Donation

A list of the donors will be included in the “happy 50th anniversary” card. The deadline for making a donation is July 15th, 2014.

Please spread the word to anyone who might want to contribute to this exciting project. And thank you in advance for your donation.

Director of Operations

A Sad Loss of Albany Aikido

John Wright started his Aikido training in 1979. In addition to Faust Sensei his Aikido has been influenced by Yousef Mehter Sensei, Yamada Shihan, Kanai Shihan, Chiba Shihan and a host of other teachers to whom he is eternally grateful to for their encouraging him to try new ways of doing familiar techniques. John has also been involved in the Chinese martial arts Tai Chi, Bagua Chang and Hsing-i. His Aikido training has made him realize that conflict situations with others can generally best be handled by a non-confrontational approach – blending in Aikido parlance. Passing on this art has been a wonderful experience. John received his 4th Dan in 2006.

Special Project for NY Aikikai &Yamada Sensei’s 50th Anniversary

Dear Fellow Aikidoka

As you probably know, 2014 is a special year for the New York Aikikai and Yamada Sensei, celebrating the dojo’s 50th anniversary!

We are working on a special project for this celebration, and would like to ask for everybody’s help.

If you, or someone you know, visited the NYA dojo (or the anniversaries summer camps) along these years (1964-2014) and have interesting photos from your visit please email them to us in the highest quality you have. If you have many, you can send them in lower quality and we can ask for the ones we pick to be sent later at a higher resolution.

If you have older (none digital), printed photos and you are unable to scan them, let us know and we can help with that too.

Please send your photos to (or contact with any questions) Shai Golan –shaigolan@gmail.com

To be able to put this together in time for the summer celebrations we would appreciate it if you send us your photos ASAP or, by end of February at the latest.

Your help is greatly appreciated and we hope to see everybody at one of the many upcoming NYA 50th celebrations!

Shai Golan,

New York Aikikai

Summer Camp Update

Plans for summer camp 2014 are well on their way.  The flier is complete (click here to view), online registration process is almost in place, hotel reservation portal is near completion.  Keep your eyes on the USAF newsletter Summer Camp page, your email box and the USAF Summer Camp facebook page for further announcements and the virtual ringing of the opening bell!

Happy Holidays

Each year I look forward to December, mostly because of my dojo’s holiday seminar.  The mat is always full of New York Aikikai members, both old and new, as well as so many visitors who come to celebrate aikido and friendship.  I am happy to be home at this time surrounded by people enjoying themselves.  It’s always a good weekend for me.

As you may know, there are some recent changes in the USAF Board of Directors. Many board members dedicated several years of their time and put in a lot of hard work for the USAF.  We are thankful for their service and all they did. But it is also important to be open to change and allow others to have a chance to dedicate them selves.   As of November, the board has a new Vice President (Andy Demko), Chairman (Joe Nemeth), Treasurer (Paul Forhan) and Secretary (Larry Bieri).

Looking forward, 2014 will be a very busy year for me.  I will travel to dojos all over the world celebrating the 50th anniversary of my arrival in NY. I hope you will join me on the mat, as I continue to do what I came here to do half a century ago – spread aikido.  Happy holidays to all of you.
